Paul Kruger features on the obverse side of 2022 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins. This design was created in the 1890s by Otto Schultz and first used on the gold coins of the historic South African Pound. The left-profile relief captures a stately image of Kruger and comes with two inscriptions. The name of the nation is noted on this side in Afrikaans and English as SUID AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA.
A Springbok antelope is captured in right-profile relief on the reverse of 2022 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coins. This design shows the majestic creatures as it bounds along the grassy plains of southern Africa. The field includes inscriptions of KRUGERRAND, 2022, and FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD. The date mark on Krugerrands is split as 20 to the left of the Springbok and 22 to the right of the Springbok.
Fractional-ounce South African Krugerrands were introduced by the Rand Refinery and South African Mint in 1980s. The series offers 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. Like the 1 oz gold coin, these coins are legal tender in South Africa, but have no assigned face value in Rands.
